Cage Buying Considerations

One of the questions that we get asked the most is what size cage is right for my bird. So we decided to create "Cage Buying Considerations" section to help our valued customers choose the right cage for a safe and happy home for their winged family member.

As you can imagine birds love space so buying the biggest cage you can afford is best and makes them the happiest. There are a few important factors needed to be considered before buying that large cage on sale or the cute looking decorative cage you seen in the paper.

The proper bar spacing measurements are very important for bird safety. Improper bar spacing can lead to injury for your pet bird.

For small birds bar spacing should be no larger than 1/2". The types of birds we consider in this catagory are budgie / parakeet, canary, finch, lovebird, parrotlet and other such sized birds. Check our "Daily Cage" selections.

For medium birds bar spacing should be between 5/8" to 3/4". The types of birds we consider in this catagory are caique, cockatiel, conure, lory, quaker and other such sized birds. Check our "Daily Cage" selections.

For larger birds bar spacing should be between 3/4" to 1". The types of birds we consider in this catagory are africian grey, along with the smaller cockatoo and macaw species. Check our "Daily Cage" selections.

For Extra large birds bar spacing should be between 1" to 1 1/2". The types of birds we feel fit this catagory are the large cockatoo and macaw species. Check our "Daily Cage" selections.

Cage sizes and styles vary and can be confusing, but the best thing to remember is your bird's cage needs to be larger enough that your bird is comfortable and not cramped up. All birds need exercise daily, smaller birds, such as finch or canary, do not climb, they need flight space. Larger birds wings are usually clipped for safety and they need space to climb and play while in a cage. You want a cage that allows your bird to expand it's wings and still have free space all around.
